Middle School Curriculum... out of sequence post oops
'Just because some of us can read and write and do a little math, that does not mean we deserve to conquer the universe.' Kurt Vonnegut Jnr Author ... I thought that was funny, nevermind.....
I think Bean is staing fluid concepts in this article but it is written too long in my opinion. I think standardized testing is pointless and outdated, besides providing assessment and general information about teaching methods. This type of testing is ok for diagnosing a problem but limits skill and ability level since usually the entire test is multiple choice anyways. I feel that now in art education, the approach is so different compared to when I was in school, we never thought about social issues! Rather, how to make the oragami bird or draw a still life. Even though this article was written sooo long ago, the issues are still relevant. The video to the right reminds me of my highschool art experience, sad but so true :(

Terry Barrett and Gude readings
I understand what Gude is saying about contemporary art and she does make good points about the true fundamentals of art! She expands through ideas (eg. layering, gazing, hybridity) that offer multiple perspectives to interpreting art. I do feel however, that after reading so much of Gude and her principals I have a pretty good handle (Beth made sure of that!) I am sick of advocating and having to explain to people how imprtant art is in schools....and its not just math and science that are the core subjects!
Jenny Holzers work combines some principals of representaion and hybridity as seen in the two examples below, WORDS CAN BE A CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK!

Holzer uses text in her art to open up thoughts and perceptions about social issues. Violence, war. media., sexuality and morality issues are a common thread throughout her work.

Surrealist games
I found the variety of games interesting...I chose to use the games with text to focus my teacher examples on. I like that the idea of art games centered around world issues, social issues, culture, diversity, values, exploration of self, concept of community, democracy and also exploration and learning. The different games provide alternate strategies to problem solving. The idea of game theory and planning cirriculum themes around these ideas is interesting.....games also assist in bringing ideas inside the art room.
I also think this blogging thing is neat, kind of like a place to record and research as well as check out what others are doing. I must admit, at first I was somewhat freaked out seeming like this one big public venue....but after seeing what my other peers are thinking, doing and relating to is helpful.
The lesson plan format has changed as well....I am relieved but perplexed. Why so late in the game?
